Universal and British values
How do we actively promote British values at Sunrise primary school?
- Enable children to express opinions and be involved in decision making in our regular circle groups, classroom elections and in surveys.
- Children contribute to class debates as part of the English curriculum
- Children learn about ‘people who help us’ (public services) in the early years curriculum.
- Teaches children strategies for solving perceived injustice peacefully.
Rule of law:
- Children learn about the school rules and why we have them.
- They develop their understanding of right and wrong; fair and unfair.
- They learn that rules help everyone to be safe.
- A home school agreement is signed by pupils and parents.
- Access to school policy on school website
- Discovery of core principles in British and universal values.
- The school ethos encourage children to develop their self- knowledge, self-esteem and self-confidence.
- Children are given opportunities for responsibilities e.g. classroom monitors, sports leaders through class room elections.
- Participation in anti-bullying week activities each year.
- Pupil voice is promoted in our regular circle groups.

Respect and tolerance:
- The school ethos/ Moto promotes respect for all.
- Spiritual, moral, social and cultural curriculum promotes respect for all cultures.
- Curriculum topics explore a range of other countries and cultures.

- Learning of British history through field trips and class based learning.

Sunrise Primary School and Nursery provides Spiritual, moral, social and cultural development (SMSC) which includes the promotion of Universalism which also includes the incorporation of British values by:
- Enabling students to develop their self-knowledge, self-esteem and self-confidence.
- Enabling students to distinguish right from wrong and to respect the civil and criminal law of England.
- Encouraging students to accept responsibility for their behaviour, show initiative, and to understand how they can contribute positively to the lives of those living and working in the locality of the school and to society more widely.
- Enabling students to acquire a broad general knowledge of and respect for public Institutions and services in England.
- Encouraging further tolerance and harmony between different cultural traditions by enabling students to acquire an appreciation of and respect for their own and other cultures.

The school aims to take pupils to at least one place of interest per academic term as part of the British values learning curriculum.

|Geoffrey Museum||The Museum explores and demonstrates British living from 17th century to modern times.|
|Buckingham palace||Official home of the Queen. The Changing of the Guard takes place outside at 11.30am each day.|
|Tower of London||One of London’s World Heritage Sites, visitors can see the Crown Jewels and famous ravens.|
|Big Ben||The Houses of Parliament’s most famous clock tower is one of London’s iconic landmarks.|
|Magistrates court||A place of law when criminal and civil proceedings are deliberated, a place the rule of law is practiced.|
|Museum of London||The history of London, from prehistoric to modern times, is documented here.|
|Epping forest||Ancient English woodland and heritage site.|
|Globe theatre||Replica of the open-air theatre originally designed in 1599 by William Shakespeare’s playing company, the Lord Chamberlain’s Men.|
|Houses of Parliament||The Palace of Westminster is where you’ll find the House of Lords and House of Commons in the aim for democratic society.|
|Westminster Abbey||Built in 1560, and venue for the wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton, it’s full name is the Collegiate Church of St Peter at Westminster|
